The Las Vegas - Clark County Library District in Las Vegas, Nevada has been celebrating and observing National Hispanic Heritage Month since 1997. It has been a prominent aspect of the cultural programming done by this district as the Executive Director, Daniel L. Walters has been an advocate of diversity initiatives.
If you point your browser to www.lvccld.org and select the Espanol link you will find the programming information. If you select the "Leer Mas" link you will find a PDF of the National Hispanic Heritage Month brochure that should be loaded near the middle of August.
Enclosed below you will find the programs and exhibits that the Library District will be doing this upcoming September 15 - October 15, 2006.

Fiesta de la Noche Rainbow Library Amphitheatre Friday, September 22 5 p.m. - 9 p.m.
Enjoy a night under the stars with family entertainment including traditional dance with costumes, and cowboy rope tricks presented by Mexico Vivo Dance Company. Visit with various community groups and enjoy activities for kids. At 7 p.m., Latin band Los Leones de la Salsa will perform an exciting contemporary salsa mix sure to please everyone. Bring a picnic basket and lawn chair or blanket.
Learn Spanish! Spanish language instructor Sylvia Ceballos-Rousseau will teach a two-hour introductory Spanish class. Registration is required.

Saturday, September 16 Green Valley Library - 2 p.m. Ricardo Griego, Flamenco Guitarist Dont miss this special performance of Spanish guitar flavored with the rhythms of Latin America. A renowned guitarist, composer and teacher, Ricardo will be joined by flamenco dancers interpreting traditional music as well as his own compositions. Ricardo has opened for such acts as Los Lobos, Malo, Esteban, Linda Ronstadt and Tower of Power.

Xavier Quijas Yxayotl, Aztec and Mayan Flute Music Experience the wonders of Mesoamerica as Xavier Quijas Yxayotl presents a musical program for the entire family. A native of Mexico, he explores Pre-Hispanic music using hand-made replicas of ancient instruments. The program includes playful insight into the Aztec and Mayan peoples as well as their history and the importance of music to their cultures.

The History of Flamenco Dance Thursday, October 5 Clark County Library - 7 p.m.
Flamenco, a dance and musical style that originates from Spains Andalucia region, embodies a complex musical and cultural tradition. Join Margo Torea, of the Sociedad Cultural Hispania, for an overview and demonstration of the many different styles of flamenco dance.

Enjoy performances by students from the Clark County School Districts Mariachi Music Instructional Program. Bring the family to listen to traditional mariachi favorites as well as a special performance by Mariachi Plata de Las Vegas.
Brian Kral Presents Diego Rivera Saturday, October 7 Sahara West Library - 2 p.m.
Brian Kral, nationally known playwright and the author of more than 20 plays, will perform a dramatic examination of the life and paintings of internationally acclaimed Mexican artist, Diego Rivera.
